Judges' comments
In his opening remarks Paul said that they had expected a high general standard of ringing by all teams on these nice new bells and that this had been confirmed by the practice touch of the first team. They had therefore marked to an appropriately high standard. Each row had been awarded two marks if well struck, one if there had been a clip or a rushed lead, or zero for two clips or worse. Given the test piece of 200 changes, the maximum score was 400. Kate then went through the teams in the order of ringing.
Team 1 Peterborough Diocesan Guild Practice had been impressive and the test piece had improved after a nervous start. An “almost method mistake (amm)” had been recovered very quickly. A good, competitive, disciplined performance that set a good standard for the competition.
Team 2 Lincoln Diocesan Guild Practice had been much faster than for the first team. The test piece had struggled to settle in and a crunch early on had made this more difficult and maintained a level of nervousness which incurred more faults. Improved towards the end.
Team 3 Bedfordshire Association They made very good use of the practice time with a good long stretch of opening rounds in which the rhythm had settled. The leading had been uneven at first but had settled and was exceptionally good by the end of the test piece. The ringing had been a little unsettled by an amm.
Team 4 Essex Association They made good use of the practice and then the test piece was a little slower. A method mistake in the second lead took some time to recover, but did recover well so that the third and fifth leads were excellent.
Team 5 Hertford County Association The practice was very impressive. The test piece had a good opening but seemed to be affected a little by nerves. Two method mistakes were recovered very quickly and the ringing settled into a good and consistent rhythm.
Team 6 Suffolk Guild The start had been nervous and unsettled but the test piece improved into a nice rhythm, picking up occasional faults through strung-out backstrokes leading to seemingly early handstroke leads. Altogether a good and disciplined piece of ringing.
Team 7 Ely Diocesan Association They set off briskly but the ringing appeared edgy and nervous, method trips taking some changes to correct. There were a couple of method mistakes and the ringing never quite settled, although it improved in the last lead.
Team 8 Norwich Diocesan Association Good opening rounds and a nice speed. Collected some faults from rushed leads. Good ringing with no method trips.
Team 9 Cambridge University Guild The test piece took time to settle, it appeared that not all wanted to ring at the same speed. Some method trips and uneven leading. The test piece improved and eventually settled at a uniform speed.
